Sailing and Painting: an expedition artist

I had not heard of that concept before: an expedition artist.

Los Angeles based artist Danielle Eubank has embarked on the Phoenicia, a re-creation of a 6th century BC Phoenician sailing vessel which did the first circumnavigation of Africa. The artist joined the crew as an active member and set up her studio on the boat to document the project through waterscape paintings. There is an exhibition of her work for a few more days in this gallery in London.

The voyage started in Arwad, Syria in August 2008 and will finish this winter when the boat comes back to the UK after having travelled 17,000 miles and being 10 months at sea.

What a great story to fuel the imagination of the little ones…
