If you need one reason to take a trip to London with your daughter/niece/little step-sister this fall (yes, I know, I am being very sexist), make it: the Degas and the Ballet: Picturing Movement exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts. It’s stunning, very complete, and it will move any little and big girl who has ever dreamed of being a petit rat de l’Opera (ie. a ballerina but literally meaning Little Rat of the Opera in French..don’t ask!).
I grew up with a poster of this painting above in our home so of course I could not be insensitive to Degas work. But whether you like classic painting or not, Degas expression of movement will not leave you indifferent. It’s on until December 11th 2011 and is really worth a trip to London this fall.
