We recently went to a very unusual concert that I’ve been wanting to write about, but it’s been hard to tell the feelings with words as it involved all senses.
In case you don’t know them, Amadou & Mariam are a blind couple from Mali. They’ve both been blind from a very young age. Gifted with a beautiful voice and a talent for musicality, they have reached fame over the last 10 years, as leading (two) voice(s) on the World Music stage. I had seen them in concert before and enjoyed it very much.
This time, their concert called Eclipse was a performance in a completely dark space, which kept us stimulated on all senses for 1h30. Noises coming in from my right of market conversations in Bamako, rose scents spread in from above, laughs and murmurs in the background… I could not even see my husband who was seating next to me, that’s how pitch black it was. It allowed us to immerse ourselves completely into the sensorial experience. It was really strong.

If the concert is scheduled anywhere near you, I highly recommend you go with the children (maybe age 6+?). I know Marcelo would have loved it.
Amadou & Mariam will be performing Eclipse in Paris mid January 2012 if you are nearby.
ps: how come i can never manage to embed youtube videos on my post?? grrr….
