Family skiing in an Austrian Family hotel

Feb 2, 2010

I’ve never been able to pronounce its name properly, but Uebergossene Alm is a really good hotel for all inclusive, family skiing. It’s in Austria, less than an hour away from Salzburg airport (direct flights from several European cities). The hotel will arrange the transfer so you don’t need to rent a car.

At first, being French and stuck with the idea that skiing actually starts with the apres-ski, I was not keen on Austria. I was thinking beer, Abba music and impossible communication (I don’t speak German). What a snobby French you are going to think. Yep! that’s me (sometimes).

But this place was exactly what you would expect from a well-run, efficient family hotel with a good dose of charm (I did not say style. I said charm). The food is freshly cooked, the hotel is right by the slopes with a little children ski-lift 5 minutes away. There’s an indoor playground (supervised at times so you can leave your child), and a really warm swimming pool (indoor and outdoor). There are also children group dinner followed by a DVD while parents continue with their meals. There’s a spa if dad wouldn’t mind looking after the kids. And there are lots of steam rooms and saunas where, of course, everyone is walking around naked. Remember, we’re in Austria.

The breakfast buffet is incredibly rich, healthy choices, fresh squeeze orange juice as well as fried-eggs with bacon. The rooms are not particularly large, but very comfortable with fluffy pillows and big duvet. (When we were there, some rooms still needed renovation so make sure to ask for a modern room).

And for the real Austrian mountain experience, Marcelo loved more than anything our horse-carriage trip with Olga and Petra. Two years later, he still remembers their names very well.

BozAround tip:

1. If you will need one, make sure to book an English-speaking babysitter before you arrive. Ours did not and that was a bit tricky as we had to leave Marcelo with her while we were on the slopes (back then he was still little so he was ok).

2. The skiing is good but there’s no escaping to Abba and hot dogs on the slopes. That’s the negative. If you can hold yourself until you get back at the hotel, then you’re good. Start with a big breakfast, ski 10am til 3pm, then a nice wiener schnitzel on the terrace of the hotel. I know, it’s not fondue but it’s still very pleasant when you’re taking in the mountain sun under a big blanket.

Next week, we’re getting another Austrian Alps experience, at Haus Hirt hotel. Apparently they give you a baby monitor so you can leave safely and without a babysitter while you go down for dinner…And there’s an Aveda spa..heyhey..! More on that when we come back.
