Skateboarding in Uganda with the children

Jul 14, 2012

Here’s an inspiring story. It’s about the emerging skateboarding scene in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. It started in 2006 at the initiative of Jack Mubiru, the ‘father of the movement” and now counts on 52 members in the Uganda Skateboard Union, with 35 new skateboards donated from abroad since 2010. If you have an old skateboard and don’t quite know what to do with it, please pass it on to the Uganda Skateboard Association. This is their link for donations as they are set up as a non-profit with the goal of creating a new way for the youth to rise up against the idleness and boredom caused by living in poverty.

These photos alone tell the whole story:

Ceki and I did part of our honeymoon in Uganda. Exactly 8 years ago today we were in Kampala, stunned by everything around us because it was all so unfamiliar and quite different from any other place we had been to. We spent a short week in Uganda before heading to Tanzania and Zanzibar. The highlight was our trek inside the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to look for a family of gorillas. We did find them after 6hours of relatively tough trekking in the jungle, and I still remember vividly the magic hour we got to spend with them. I must write about all of this in another post…

There’s been mostly negative news flow about Uganda these last couple of years. So it’s wonderful to read about this small story on the Uganda Skateboard Union. Wish them luck and if you pass by Kampala with the children one of these days, make sure to bring your board and try the ramp!
