let the safari begin

It’s not easy to take a family to an African safari experience. It’s extremely costly (Africa as a continent hasn’t really found a way yet between rough and luxury traveling outside of the most touristy places), it often requires a bunch of vaccines which either are not recommended for the little ones, or are just a pain to get – I remember for our honeymoon, we went gorilla trekking in the mountains of Uganda and had to get a rabies shot, something the nurse in NY had never administered before!.

So it’s usually recommended to wait til the children are a bit older to go to Africa. Meanwhile, you can bring a bit of African wildlife to the nursery room with these beautiful papier mache heads from Dwell Studio. Have you noticed the latest craze with papier mache? Love it!

Made with vintage French book pages, dwell studio is producing them in collaboration with a Haiti-based non-profit organization and each piece is handmade.

Night, Snow and Sand. Arriving in Pablo Neruda’s Chile

It felt as if we were greeted by Pablo Neruda yesterday when we arrived in Santiago de Chile. His beautiful words written on the walls of Meridiano Sur Petit Hotel is such a good idea. It reminded me how much I love his poetry.

The Meridiano Sur Petit Hotel is more of a very tasteful b&b than hotel, with only 5 rooms. The location is central, it’s wireless throughout and the top floor loft is perfect for a family.

Unfortunately, I could not find a translation online of this beautiful poem of Pablo Neruda called Descubridores de Chile (Discoverers of Chile). I hope you can understand some Spanish, or you might find an anthology of his work in a good bookstore.

Santiago de Chile is not a very touristy city and I must say after 24hours it does not have so much to offer to the outsider. Recurrent earthquakes have damaged a lot of the old architecture, and the country is quite “young” on Latin American standards. That said, the NY Times ranked it Number 1 in its 40 Places to see in 2011. It’s probably because of its burgeoning hype factor.

There’s a nascent art scene (the Patricia Ready Gallery is a must-visit if you’re into contemporary art, and a nice place to stop for lunch with the kids) and some chefs are getting international recognition mixing South American and Asian flavors (dying to try Astrid y Gaston around the corner of Petit Hotel if only we can find someone to look after Marcelo & Amalya!). This article 36 Hours in Santiago can be a useful guide. Also, we had a lovely family pizza night at Tiramisu. But what I loved most as we drove around Santiago (muchas gracias Jorge!), seeing palm trees and the snow-capped Andes in the background. That only, for me, was worth a visit.

Tomorrow we’re taking a flight to the north of the country, to San Pedro de Atacama. We will spend a few days in the Atacama desert. I’m excited as we will arrive for the full moon (I’m a bit of a perfectionist, but no, this was not planned!) and Marcelo can’t wait to do a lot of star gazing.

Celebrating the Year of the Cat in Vietnam

We left Vietnam on the 1st day of the Tet last Thursday, which is a very colourful celebration of the Lunar New Year. In the Vietnamese calendar, it’s now the year of the cat. If someone can explain why it’s different from the Chinese calendar which is entering the year of the rabbit, I’d be most grateful as no-one could tell me so far!

After the midnight fireworks, Hanoi streets were empty as we drove to the airport, a strange feeling in a city normally filled with noise and thousands of motorcycles.

So it wasn’t the usual Hanoi, but we enjoyed sharing this special holiday, an enriching cultural experience for all of us in the family. The Year of the Cat has arrived in Vietnam…Chuc Mung Nam Moi! Happy New Year!

Vietnam is a very easy country to travel with a family, but the country lacks in tasteful infrastructure for the tourist, as if culture and good taste have gotten a bit lost in the fast pace of development this past decade. I searched and searched for charming guesthouses or relaxed cafes, but most places were either geared to the backpacker or the package tourist, or the very luxury end.

We went from South to North. Saigon (aka Ho Chi Minh city) & the Mekong delta by boat on an overnight trip. Then a flight to Danang in Central Vietnam to visit the charming town of Hoi An and the beautiful sites of Hue. After one month of intensive traveling, we recharged the batteries at Nam Hai for a few days, a very pampering beach resort near Hoi An. Unlucky for us, it was chilly chilly but the heated pool was perfect. And we finished in the North: Hanoi, and Halong Bay on a boat overnight. We skipped Sapa in the mountains because it’s an overnight train to get there, and a malaria zone but would have happily gone otherwise as it’s famous for the scenery and different tribes living there.

Here are some of our Vietnam favorites:

- Dinner in HCMC at Nha Hang Ngon. The concept is genius! The owner gathered the best street food vendors and turned them into chefs cooking at various stations in his restaurant. Super child friendly, well priced and delicious. The place is becoming very successful and has opened branches in Hanoi and Pnomh Penh too. We also had a very good meal at Temple Club in HCMC (848-3829 9244), more grown up than child-friendly though.

- Visiting the tumbs and the citadel in Hue, a former capital of Vietnam

- Chilling out at Nam Hai resort, a very pampering place outside of Hoi An.

- Riding with our very kind driver& guide Mr Pierre (bilingual French & English: peter74chinh@gmail.com) from Hoi An to Hue. There’s a very scenic road going through the mountain peak…Really worth it on a sunny day. We had to take the tunnel that day..

- Taking a cooking class in Hoi An at the Red Bridge restaurant and having dinner at the Secret Garden restaurant (te: 84-510-2212 6400) lost in a tiny street in Hoi An.

- Admiring the miniature wooden boats at the shop Dai Phu Giao in Hoi An.

- Getting some of our favourite clothes copied (booouh!)at Bao Khanh Silk, one of many tailor shops in Hoi An where you choose your fabric and they’ll deliver to your hotel in half a day. But plan on a few fittings for a perfect fit.

- Staying at the Sofitel Metropole in Hanoi, a legendary hotel from the colonial times.

- Sharing the frenziness of Vietnamese New Year preparations in Hanoi.

The Art of Re-Designing

Bombus specialises in re-design.

On their own terms, this means that they customize vintage furniture and homeware accessories with decoupage work of old maps, old illustrations, you name it. I love those wooden letters above. I find them soft and sturdy at once.

And this reclaimed vessel turned bowl covered in a 1950′s London street map. It’s been layered with the vintage map, then glazed with a clear lacquer to give it a smooth glossy finish. Tres voyageur chic.

Thank you Kickcan & Conkers for introducing Bombus to us.

City Prints on wood

My son Marcelo has had on his wall a little family of owls ever since he was born. It’s a sweet collage of vintage papers printed on wood, handmade by Lorena Siminovich from Petit Collage. I was really excited when she recently announced the launch of her City Prints, now available online.

Starting with New York and San Francisco, the prints are made with sustainably harvested maple veneer available in two sizes, framed or not.

Lorena, please, I am a big fan of your hometown Buenos Aires… Will you make us some BA city prints too?!
