Glamping Accessory #3: the creative tent

Colour, Creativity and Fun in Camping: it’s the leitmotiv of FieldCandy, a manufacturer of tents 100% design-led.

Always Room for One More, above

They all sleep 2 adults comfortably, so they also probably fit 4 children not so comfortably… And they have all been created by a team of design collaborators,  Shipping worldwide.

By the light of the fire, above

A great gift for those new year family resolutions of getting closer to nature without compromising on individuality.

Mily-Tent the Menace, above

First seen on the blog Bellisima Kids, which I am happy to have discovered this week.

let the safari begin

It’s not easy to take a family to an African safari experience. It’s extremely costly (Africa as a continent hasn’t really found a way yet between rough and luxury traveling outside of the most touristy places), it often requires a bunch of vaccines which either are not recommended for the little ones, or are just a pain to get – I remember for our honeymoon, we went gorilla trekking in the mountains of Uganda and had to get a rabies shot, something the nurse in NY had never administered before!.

So it’s usually recommended to wait til the children are a bit older to go to Africa. Meanwhile, you can bring a bit of African wildlife to the nursery room with these beautiful papier mache heads from Dwell Studio. Have you noticed the latest craze with papier mache? Love it!

Made with vintage French book pages, dwell studio is producing them in collaboration with a Haiti-based non-profit organization and each piece is handmade.

Cruelty-free, ethically made. For a new safari generation.

Ps: they’re available online only.

Hanemaai’s infinite home tool

Just recently graduated from The Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague, artist Hanemaai has designed one smart of a travel tool, based on the idea that the few items that you decide to take on a trip are the ones that ultimately define your identity. This is a double identity object: a suitcase and a display at once.

“Each time I move, I stretch myself out, looking here, looking there, arranging myself all over the different rooms. In stretching myself out, moving homes for me is coming to inhabit spaces, coming to embody them, where my body and the space in which it gathers cease to be distinct” Hanemaai

A few pieces are being produced. If interested, contact Hanemaai directly on via her website

Lego bricks for future architects

Legos are such smart toys. I’ve blogged before about Marcelo’s Star Wars legos, and also about this inspired book.. Lego now has an Architecture Serie with a few iconic buildings, a great new line of distinctive landmark building sets.

One of my very favourite is the New York Guggenheim designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. I still remember the first time I entered the Guggenheim uptown New York, looked up in the Rotonda and felt the magic of this incredible building, There was a bossa nova band playing in the ground floor and the music was flowing all the way to the sky. It was surreal for a museum experience, and the Guggenheim set the tone for a whole new generation of museums.

Did you know…that the first building ever to surpass 100 floors, the Empire State Building, houses about 1000 businesses and 21,000 employees…it´s so big it even has its own zip code.

And how about this one for a father & son summer project? The Farnsworth House, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in Illinois (USA) is one of the most famous modernist examples of domestic architecture.

I’ve always secretly dreamt of being an architect. These new legos might inspire a few little ones to fulfill their dreams…

Any wall space left anywhere?

It’s map time again on BozAround…

Julie Mercier, a french illustrator whom I talked about last year for her maps of the world, now has one specifically about New York. Very busy, very colourful, very entertaining.

You can buy it on the website of L’Affiche Moderne, a fantastic online gallery presenting the works of young photographers, graphic designers and children’s illustrators from all over the place.

Cambodia Knits

Half way between Anne-Claire Petit and Ugly Doll, there’s Cambodia Knits.

Founded in 2005 by Monika Nowaczyk who was at that time working for the NGO CARECambodia, Cambodia Knits is quite an exemplary social enterprise which trains and employs over 25 Cambodian women. I have been reading quite a bit about her success story in the local press, and even though I did not get a chance to speak with her or see her little dolls, I felt compelled to share it on BozAround.

It’s an ethical alternative to all the stuffed creatures that can be found in the children’s market these days. You can also sponsor a knitter by emailing info@cambodiaknits.com . If you’re looking for a knitted little monster, you might as well get one that does good to the world. You can buy Cambodia Knits online on Eyaas.com

I think that’s it for Cambodia…onto Vietnam now. It’s just an hour flight from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City, or an 8 hours boat ride along the Mekong river, which a lot of people choose to do.

Bits and pieces

Our Children’s Gorilla is a design team from Sweden who always comes up with genius ideas.

Initially started by Christopher Robin and his wife, the company has evolved tremendously over the years and now offers a very large selection of great objects for the house.

Marcelo is a big fan of his albert hook, but he does not know yet that there is now a Streamliner and an Airplane in the collection of hooks for the bedroom. For all the bits and pieces which we never know where to keep…

Scandinavia on my mind

I loved our mini-trips to Copenhagen and Oslo. I wish we could go for a full vacation to Scandinavia to explore it all. Funny how we change once we are a family. It used to be all about sunshine, sandals and a tiny tiny bit of sun protection. Now I crave for fresh air and grands espaces when we go away with the children.

There are many talented Scandinavian designers in the kids world and it’s wonderful to see that some kids e-shops now specialize in all scandi things: Sparkle & Spin. in the UK and Nordinary in France are great resources.

This is a photo from Sparkle&Spin very cute shop in South London…

None though seems to distribute Superspace online, and it’s a pitty because Sarah and Stine are very talented.

I love this portrait of them…

Both with an architect background, they have been creating many pieces related to their beloved city Copenhagen, such as these cut-out icons

and these sweet cards…

They also have an ingenious set of kids furniture that would work well in a large playroom. Check it all out on their webshop.

Btw, chef Rene Redzepi became the chef of the chefs last month when Noma in Copenhagen won the award for the very best restaurant in the world, ending the four-year reign of Spain’s El Bulli. Hmmm…

Cappellini for Disney Vs. Disneyland

You might know me by now. I’d rather get one of these chairs from Cappellini for Disney than take Marcelo and Amalya to Disneyland.

No offense, Mickey Mouse, but I am not a fan of your all-inclusive / in your face / why don’t you buy this while you’re at it entertainment. Sadly, I also know that I might divert from my principles one day, after the children beg me to go because all their friends have already gone. Never say never.

It’s an interesting collaboration between the king of Italian furniture design, Cappellini, and Walt Disney Signature, Disney’s upscale, inspired, non-character, adult lifestyle brand. They recently unveiled the five limited-edition pieces at Milan Furniture Fair. Each is designed by a different artist. Mickey’s ribbon stool is fun and iconic, as imagined by Japanese artist Nendo. I particularly fancy it. The version of French star-designer Christophe Pillet is tres chic in an all white-leather embossed with a subtle geometric pattern of Mickey’s silhouette.

These collector’s pieces can be ordered from your local Cappellini shop.
