A320 Cockpit experience…Did you know?

Jun 10, 2012

My (not so little anymore) brother recently flew us to Napoli in Italy on an Air France flight with an Airbus A320. It was the first time I was flying with him as a pilot. Needless to say I was over-excited, and over-emotioned. After all, this is my little brother who, at the age of 5 years old, was already dreaming of flying airplanes, and was building nothing else but planes with his legos. My little brother who, in his teenager years, would spend hours staring at a screen to simulate an entire Paris-New York flight with his simulator. My little brother who, as a student, got us all so nervous when he failed the first and second time the entrance exam at the prestigious French pilot school ENAC. And him again who had us all cry of happiness when he finally made it at his third and last try, entering Air France pilot scheme with the biggest smile in the sky. Talking about childhood dreams coming true…

Back to my time flying from Paris to Napoli in the cockpit…Do you ever play the game Did You Know with your children? At home, we do it all the time, especially when eating Petits filous for desserts:-) Here are 3 Q&As for you to sound a little smarter (!)

Did you know that in the cockpit of an airplane, no-one can enter without prior admission from the pilots, there’s a little camera showing them who’s knocking at the door, and the doors to the cockpit are reinforced?

Did you know that the captain and the pilot never eat the same meal during a flight, to prevent the risk that the two of them could get food poisoning simultaneously?

Did you know that in the cockpit, there’s a computerised voice announcing the altitude countdown right before landing: 500 400 300 200 100 Landed!

It was fun but it also made me realise how these few minutes at take-off and landing are so crucial and intense. We take it for granted that flying 250 people (and more such as in the new A380) is a piece of cake, a question of technology. It’s not!!! It requires such a level of concentration from the pilots, highly skilled experience and involvement in the tiniest details. Hats off to all the pilots in the world thanks to whom we can ‘fasten our seatbelt, relax and enjoy the flight”. (Mick, this one is for you xx)

Now..stay tuned for my next post on Capri Romantishna with a 30 weeks pregnant belly….
